Learning about First Nations

Yesterday in Social Studies we read about how Nahanni and her Cree community were nomadic, which means that they moved often. They lived in tipis which were made from long wooden poles and animal hides. They were  easy to pack up and move. We also read about how the tipi was very special, it was more than just shelter. The tipi held teachings on how to live in harmony and happiness. There were 15 poles and each had a teaching. See if your child remembers some of them.

We also talked about symbols that Nahanni’s community may have used to communicate with. Then using paper and crayons we created our own version of a tipi and decorated them with symbols of our choice.
